By donating to Book Worm Angels, you will put books that are fun to read into the hands of the children who need them most.
ONE IN THREE American 4th graders read below the basic reading level…1
…and many of these children grow up to become adults at a severe disadvantage. The ability to read is the foundation for making one’s way in our society. From understanding street signs and reading directions on medicine bottles, to finding and keeping a job, reading is essential.
America’s literacy problem is very real – and the statistics are staggering:
- Illiteracy costs U.S.businesses and taxpayers $20 billion per year.2
- 60% of America’s prison inmates are functionally illiterate.3
- 85% of America’s juvenile offenders are functionally illiterate.4
Giving children access to books will significantly increase their ability to read
According to the U.S. Department of Education, the average reading score for children who read nearly every day was 49 points higher than for students who hardly ever read.5
Book Worm Angels encourages children to read more and improve reading scores. Its classroom lending programs have proven effective. And a major study conducted by Learning Point Associates, confirmed that providing children with access to print materials: 6
- Improved reading performance
- Improved understand of reading basics
- Increased reading time
- Improved attitudes towards reading
Thanks to generous donors like you, Book Worm Angels has distributed more than 2 million books to 191 schools, providing books for leisure reading to more than 100,000 at risk children
